warmer than you were for a lot of this last week with. great news warmer air out there, at least tempe rarely parts of the east. little bit of rain, parts of florida will continue to see rain for much of the day. see some rain exiting part of the mid-atlantic and in towards the northeast over the next couple of hours and dry up mostly for the remainder of the day. out across the west is where all the action is a big powerful storm moving. in a lot of snow, we are going to be talking about areas seeing maybe two feet of snow in the higher elevations and rain in the lower elevations. snow begins to pull out in the central part of the country. temperaturewise eventually it will cool down but take a look at warm up today and tonight parts of the central plains. chicago overnight getting to 64. all going to come at a price. severe weather today across the plains and tomorrow there is bigger severe weather, in fact, possibly a big severe weather outbreak. tornadoes for your sunday, possibly.
supreme court and people who lived within the system and unlimited contributions are an inherently corrupt system they said in the 1970s. what caused the problem is not mccain feingold, but the citizens united decision which opened the door to unlimited contributions being spent in unlimited expenditures by outside groups. let s look at 2012. the parties and candidates spent some $5 billion. that s 80% of the expenditures that were made. the parties spent some $2 billion, not fact exactly that the parties are starving for money. on former speaker s comment, he is pointing to the problems in the primaries where the expenditure groups have come in and where the threat is and that s citizens united. here s the theory of what if
2010 citizens united supreme court decision saying money speaks opening the floodgates for outside groups. through what we now know as superpacs. in the 2012 election cycle alone, superpacs spent over half a billion dollars. and this week, as we saw the big money influencers pull their strings on the gop, the supreme court heard what many are calling the sequel to citizens united and it s even worse than the original. thanks to this man. sean mccutchen, an alabama republican who wants to get rid of limits to the total amount an individual can spend on candidates and parties in a given election cycle. right now, that limit is just over $123,000. if he gets his way, that number could dwrump to as much as $3.5 million. because after all, what s another $3.5 million to the pile, right, justice scalia.
and we ll see a lot of push back. we see states moving toward disclosure and i think that will be interesting. but one thing i think the case exposes, we have unlimited donations, often secret, by outside groups, incredibly restricted limits with contributions and that is the heart of what the supreme court has to decide. the way the rules are now, if you re running for congress or the u.s. senate or, frankly, the presidency, you re at an unfair advantage because an outside group can control the campaign message more so than you can. that s weird. that s not fair. if you re a millionaire, would you rather give a really big check, much bigger than you re allowed to now to the candidate and his campaign himself or to some outside group. karl rove. after this last cycle, a lot of folks might ask they d rather give it to the candidate, right? well, it depends. or is the candidate going to waste it. obviously an outside group can run ads that are a little
154 republicans voting yea, two republicans so far voting no, 125 democrats voting nay against this bill. only one democrat joining with the republicans so far. so it looks like it s going to be strictly along party lines. that should not be a surprise. strictly along party lines could lead to what some have said is an overwhelming victory but what about, gloria, those republicans who will not go along party lines? do they exist? yeah, there may be a few. you heard rogers before saying shutting down the government s not a good idea. but you know, here s the play and the story in republican politics right now. this is kind of the back story to all of this, which is republicans aren t so much afraid of democrats as they are of being primaried and having republicans run to their right. so what s going on is that a lot of these republicans went home over the summer, they got pounded in ads run by outside
