Dontpokethedragon Draws Clear At Century | Standardbred Canada

With a mid-race brush to the top on a windy afternoon, Dontpokethedragon left the competition in his wake to romp in the $8,100 Open Pace on opening day at Century Downs Tuesday (May 18). Dontpokethedragon landed in third from post 2 off the wings while 9-5 favourite Just A Start dueled with Outlaw Gunsablazin for the lead by a :27.3 opening quarter. As the tempo cooled, driver Dave Kelly hustled Dontpokethedragon out of third and to the point past a :57.3 half. Kelly then quickened the pace into the backstretch while Just A Start and Outlawgunsablazin tired, forcing the backfield around them while Dontpokethedragon coasted by three-quarters in 1:26.1. With his margin widening around the final turn, Dontpokethedragon continued to grow his lead to the beam, hitting the finish of a 1:58.2 mile 11-and-a-quarter lengths in front of second-place finisher Armycaptin Hanover. I Ama Rocket closed for third.

Major Custard might have made his final start in Alberta after his co-owner Jim Marino announced that he would be selling a number of his racehorses to concentrate on younger stock. This announcement comes as the province s 2020 harness racing season comes to an end, necessitating a double-header card on Saturday. Competing in the second of two $22,500 Brad Gunn Breeders Stakes divisions, Major Custard and driver Mike Hennessy sat patiently in fourth during the first half of his contest while Chazmichaelmichael (Kelly Hoerdt) paced through splits of :28.3 and :59.2. Outlaw C My Shadow (Connie Kolthammer) made a move from third just before the half and looped to the lead, leaving Major Custard first up after H

Lancaster On A Roll | Standardbred Canada

You know the feeling when you get into a scorching car with the windows closed on one of Edmonton’s rare sweltering afternoons? That’s Alberta harness trainer Chris Lancaster. Hot. Red-hot. Blistering hot. On one big, long roll since the second week of the current harness meet at Century Mile, Lancaster has won with 10 of his last 12 starters. But wait, there’s more. The two horses the harness trainer sent out that didn’t win lost to stablemates: Probert was upset by barn mate Lady Neigh Neigh in last Sunday’s (Dec. 6) feature, and at the end of last month, Custards Crown finished second to Probert in the $88,320 Don Byrne Memorial.
