SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT) Sparta will celebrate the start of biking season May 1 as the three tunnels of the Elroy-Sparta Trail reopen for the year.
The Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce, located at 111 Milwaukee St., will host a variety of activities throughout the day, beginning with an 8 a.m. pancake breakfast that serves as a fundraiser for the Sparta Ambassadors.
“Being America’s Bicycling Capital, we wanted to bring a new twist to an already established event. We are excited to be starting something that hopefully will last for years to come. We have quite a day planned that you don’t want to miss-from food to vendors, to a BMX stunt show-and of course, Ben Bikin’,” said Heidi Prestwood, Executive Director of the Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce.
ORA, La Crosse parks and rec warn of weather-related trail closures
March 1, 2021 10:08 AM Jourdan Vian
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) The Outdoor Recreation Alliance and the La Crosse Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department sent out a reminder Monday that trails will be fragile and periodically closed throughout spring’s freeze/thaw cycle.
As the weather warms up, trail users need to be careful of mud and stay off trails where they start to sink to avoid damaging the trail. During the freeze/thaw cycle, the ground freezes at night and thaws during the day, leaving a wet and slushy trail. When trail users start to leave tracks, they can cause problems that will force the trails to be closed for weeks for repairs.
