CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (CN) Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine seems to be effective against new strains of coronavirus, including one that is thought to be 50% more transmissible, the company said Monday morning.
The pharmaceutical company announced that results from studies of the vaccine’s impact on emerging strains showed “neutralizing titers” against strains from the United Kingdom and from South Africa, and that the vaccine showed no antibody reduction against the new strains.

RICHMOND, Va. Virginiaâs state vaccine coordinator said that the Virginia Department of Health will change how it allocates doses of the COVID-19 vaccine due to the on-going shortage of the vaccine and that if the supply does not increase, it could take between two to three months to finish vaccinating those eligible under Phase 1A and 1B of the rollout. For now, most recipients should know that they re going to, pretty reliably, get what they re getting for the next four weeks or so, said Dr. Danny Avula during a telebriefing on Friday. We need to manage and temper expectations, because with just several hundred, or in some cases, a couple thousands doses coming to each community, there are not going to be that many slots for people to get vaccinated. The first Covid-19 vaccine approved for use in the U.S., Pfizer and BioNTech’s shot was purportedly 95% effective in preventing symptomatic coronavirus infections in a large study group. Positive study results have also been released for Moderna’s vaccine, which secured an emergency use authorization by the Food and Drug Administration on Dec. 18.
Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar sounded an optimistic note as distribution of the Pfizer and Modern vaccines are being ramped up across the United States this week.
The state of Texas this week will send 2,700 vials of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to McLennan County providers to administer to health workers and long-term care residents, state officials said Monday.
The first shipments of the newly approved vaccine arrived in Texas on Monday, and more than 1,100 providers around the state are expected to get their share by Thursday, a Texas Department of State Health Services spokesman said.
Those providers, including pharmacies, clinics and the Waco-McLennan County Health District, will provide the vaccine to the highest-priority populations: Frontline medical workers, EMS workers, and assisted living and nursing home residents.
