Springsteen, McKenna, Dylan: A look back at the year's best music

“ROUGH AND ROWDY WAYS” by BOB DYLAN (Columbia) You can’t find many dance tunes on this record, and in fact, much of it is delivered almost as spoken word. Dylan and his core quintet are aided by guests like Benmont Tench and Fiona Apple, but as usual it’s his lyrics that stick out, even if they are equal parts compelling and confounding. The CD version is a two-disc affair, with an entire disc devoted to the 17-minute “Murder Most Foul,” in which the rock bard posits the assassination of JFK as a watershed moment when innocence and idealism died. He then weaves in a history of the pop culture that followed, hinting that the rest of the 1960s and ‘70s were influenced by that event, while referring back to it continually. You know, “you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.” Feels like that doesn t it? Mercifully and thanks to physics we do get to leave 2020 if not without a few scars, largely emotional, that we picked up along the way.   We can’t imagine that anyone might have missed anything that happened this year, since it seemed that everything happened this year, and we were all stuck at home with nothing to do but troll social media and reflect on our lives pre-shutdown.
