The groundbreaking ceremony for the Girls Education Center in Leyte (UNESCO / KOICA / MANILA BULLETIN)
The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), together with the Korea International Cooperation Office (KOICA) and the Department of Education (DepEd), held the groundbreaking ceremony on April 14 to signal the start of the construction of the Girls Education Center (GEC).
“The Government of the Republic of Korea, through its development cooperation agency KOICA, supports the enhancement of learning opportunities for young women in vulnerable communities around the world,’ said Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Inchul Kim.
He added, “In the Philippines, Korea is glad to partner with UNESCO to implement KOICA’s project to provide alternative learning opportunities for girls out of school in Tacloban City, an area where the Korean government has been providing various other assistance, including humanitarian and reconstruction assistan

The UNESCO Project Better Life for Out-of-School Girls to Fight Against Poverty and Injustice in the Philippines is moving forward with the construction of 1,728sq.m 2-storey Girls Education Center. The Center is expected to cater to 1,889 Alternative Learning System girl-learners in Tacloban City and Palo, Leyte, areas which were devastated by Super Typhoon Haiyan last 2013. Leyte, Philippines – The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, together with the Korea International Cooperation Office (KOICA) and the Philippines Department of Education, held a groundbreaking ceremony on 14 April 2021, celebrating the start of the construction of the Girls Education Center (GEC) in Palo, Leyte, Philippines.
April 14, 2021 DR MA. Gemma Ledesma, newly installed regional director of Department of Education (DepEd)-Eastern Visayas, lauded the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) and Korea International Cooperation Office (Koica) during the groundbreaking ceremony of Girls Education Center in Palo, Leyte on Wednesday, April 14, 2021. We see this facility as one that has been needed for years. We are excited because we know for sure that this type of support will increase the motivation of our Alternative Learning System (ALS) learners to finish the program, said Ledesma.
The construction of Girls Education Center is part of the Better Life for Out-of-School Girls to Fight Against Poverty and Injustice in the Philippines project funded by Koica, and implemented by Unesco together with the DepEd.
