here s what john edwards had to say after the trial. i want to make sure that everyone hears from me and from my voice that while i do not believe i did anything illegal or ever thought i was ever doing anything illegal, i did an awful, awful lot that was wrong. the federal government still has the option of a retrial, that doesn t seem very likely at this point. joining me to talk about all of that, senior legal analyst jeff toobin and david peril managing ed tord of radaronline.com and former editor-in-chief of the national enquirer which first broke the john edwards pregnancy scandal. jeff, are you surprised by this verdict? not at all. this was a weak, weak case, but john edwards was a deeply unappealing person to the jury, so you can see how the jury was pushed in different directions and i think in a way, a mostly hung jury is sort of appropriate resolution of this case because you wouldn t want to see john edwards given how he lived his life walking out of ther

welcome, everybody. our starting point is this breaking news. two american tourists have been kidnapped in dahab, egypt, in the sinai region. the kidnappers, it appears, are trying to negotiate some sort of prisoner exchange. jill daugherty joins us. what do we know? the state department is in touch with the families of these two people. names have not been given. they re 31 years old. the state department is providing counselor services and they are in touch and working very closely with egyptian authorities to try to resolve this. essentially, what happened, these two people, two americans in a car on their way to a resort at dahab. you mentioned that name. it s a former fishing village. apparently really a lovely site, place for snorkeling and diving. and so they were on their way. their car is stopped. they re yanked out of the car and taken away. it appears that the people who did that want the release the demand is for the release of an egyptian man who was arrest
good morning to you. i m carol costello. thank you for joining us this morning. mitt romney is standing by his decision to attend a vegas fund-raiser with donald trump today even though the real estate mogul won t let go of the birther issue. trump is again questioning where president obama was born. he first raised the issue a year ago. you know, back when he was running for president. barack obama should end this. he should provide the public with a birth certificate. if he doesn t do it, he s doing a tremendous disservice to the public. trump harped on the issue for such a long time that for the first time in american history, an american president produced his long form birth certificate. trump still hasn t put the issue to arrest but romney welcomes his support. joining me now is cnn senior political analyst ron brownstein. hi, ron. good morning. the obama campaign is hitting back with a new campaign ad going after romney about this controversy. let s watch a bit
these beaches had been closed for people to get into the water, and we talked to a life guard just the other day about the strong rip currents that they are concerned about. take a listen. so i see the white caps out there. is that safe for a person to get into the water? no. it is not. the thing is with closing water completely, you let somebody knee deep they want to get waist deep. you let them waist deep they want to go in. reporter: what is a rip current? it s a channel of water pulls out to sea, too much water close to the shore, rip current will pull you out to sea, it s gravity. rip current will pull you out 20 to 150 yards at eight to ten miles an hour. reporter: we saw a lot of people out on the beach yesterday, no one was allowed in the water. the life guards made sure no one got in with the concern about rip currents. george howell for us this morning, thank you. we ll continue to check in with you throughout the morning to get updates. let s go tote rob
