DOST trains Catanduanes villagers on improved vinegar production

LEGAZPI CITY - The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Bicol through its Catanduanes provincial office has conducted technology assistance training for vinegar production in Bagamanoc town. In an interview on Monday, Engr. Marie Grace Molina, DOST Catanduanes director, said the training will help improve the quality of vinegar being produced by villagers in the municipality. "The three-day training (Aug. 9-11) equipped both our staff and the participants with the right and accelerated process of fermenting coco water and vinegar production," Molina said. She said the training was participated in by 19 individuals from different associations. "It will surely utilize coco water from copra meat processing which could provide additional income to farmers and the associations," she said. LEGAZPI CITY - The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Catanduanes will fund abaca-related research in a bid to help and support the staging of the 6th Abaca Festival on May 24-28 in the province, which was recently declared as the "Abaca Capital of the Philippines". Engr. Marie Grace Molina, DOST-Catanduanes director, in a follow-up interview on Tuesday, said the funding will be received by the winners in the "Search for the Noblest Catandunganon Researcher". "This competition will provide an opportunity for the researchers to present new ideas and concepts related to abaca products and technologies," Molina said. DOST allots P2 9-M for Catanduanes water desalination project

LEGAZPI CITY - The Department of Science and Technology in Bicol (DOST-5) through its Catanduanes provincial office will soon build desalination facilities that will provide clean, potable water to two barangays. In an interview on Friday, Marie Grace Molina, DOST-Catanduanes director, said their regional office is allocating PHP2.9 million for the development of a desalination project in Pandan town. "The project is under the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) program and Pandan is one of our CEST communities in Catanduanes, aside from that, the beneficiary barangay has a scarcity in water supply," Molina said. She said the municipality of Pandan has set aside a counterpart fund of PHP1.5 million for the project. "The project will be an eco-enterprise to provide funds for the maintenance of the facility.
