Christmas In July A Success In Community Spirit
A view of center court at Penn Central Mall during Christmas in July and the vendor show.
Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa Main Street was all set to enjoy a Saturday in the park for Christmas in July, but Mother Nature had other plans and drove the party indoors to the Penn Central Mall.
Jessica Reuter, Oskaloosa Main Street Director, explained that the decision to move indoors wasn’t taken lightly. Still, with an already soggy downtown, the promise of rain made that decision easier to move indoors.
Christmas in July is a downtown event that helps raise funds for Oskaloosa’s ‘Painting With Lights’ program. The goal is to help keep the program going, and to also expand it one day, hopefully.

(Oskaloosa, Iowa) – Oskaloosa Main Street is excited and grateful to receive grant funding from Mahaska County Community Foundation for a new corn cooker for Sweet Corn Serenade!
2020 was the year that Sweet Corn Serenade almost did not happen in part because of the challenges and uncertainty of event planning during a pandemic, and in part because the long-relied-upon corn roaster was discovered to be no longer operable shortly before the festival. Fortunately, the Mahaska County Cattlemen lent their second grill for the event, which went on in a drive-thru format with small crowds due to COVID-19 precautions. The day was saved, and a long-beloved community event continued its 33rd year in historic downtown Oskaloosa with social distancing, masked volunteers, and a steady line of drive-thru orders.
