It s become an all-too-common term when referring to the effects of the pandemic-forced remote classroom, with students from low-income families among the hardest hit. That fact did not escape 17-year-old Christian Hughes - a junior in the  International Baccalaureate® program at Allen D. Nease High School in Ponte Vedra Beach - who has a knack for all things STEM. He fast-recognized the mounting inequities for this population when it comes to a vital component of the associated curriculum: field trips. And he decided to do something about it.

Ormond Beach Launches Save Our School Campaign In Regards To Osceola Elementary

Feb 7, 2021 7:47 AM Ormond Beach, FL - The possibility of Osceola Elementary being shut down and students merged with those at Ortona Elementary School has led to the creation of a Save Osceola Elementary School petition. The city of Ormond Beach is working to keep the school open. At the January 26 school board meeting, Joyce Shanahan, the city manager, addressed the Board to share the city commission’s strong desire to have the new school built on the Osceola site. This comes a year after the Volusia County School Board (VCSB) decided to make Ortona Elementary the location for the new Beachside K-5 School. The decsion was made and then came COVID-19. Ormond and Daytona both want new school; district meeting canceled

The Ormond Beach City Commission is considering using its emergency alert system to inform residents of a uniquely urgent matter: A School Board discussion about the consolidation of Osceola and Ortona elementary schools. But the meeting where those talks were supposed to take place was canceled and, at the time of publication, has not been rescheduled. It s the latest news in more than a year s worth of discussion on the topic, and shows an escalation in the cities bids to house a brand new school. The Volusia County school district has long been planning to consolidate the schools, and previously voted to build the brand new school on the Ortona Elementary campus in Daytona Beach. But at a January workshop, board members discussed the possibility of changing that plan, in favor of building the new school on the Osceola Elementary campus in Ormond Beach.
