Tom Stoppard Versus Mike Nichols

Tom Stoppard Versus Mike Nichols Gigantic new biographies by Hermione Lee and Mark Harris reveal the possibilities and the limits of a life in art. Jack Taylor/Getty Images (Stoppard); Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images (Nichols) In 1983, the director Mike Nichols was rehearsing Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing on Broadway. The cast included Glenn Close, Jeremy Irons, Christine Baranski, Peter Gallagher, and Cynthia Nixon, then 17 years old. Stoppard had flown over from London for rehearsal. Wayne Koestenbaum on the Art of the Fugue - Artforum International

This week, the editors celebrate Wayne Koestenbaum’s essay on the art of the fugue, “Notes on Not Now,” which appeared in the magazine’s pages in December 1995. Koestenbaum’s conversation with countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo will be released tomorrow as part of the online video series “Artists On Writers | Writers On Artists,” a copresentation of Artforum and Bookforum. “I am confused about the spirit of the age,” Wayne Koestenbaum confesses in his incandescent and hilarious he would likely prefer the word hysterical essay “Notes on Not Now.” Playing inside the form of the fugue both the musical composition and that muggy state of mind the piece muses on what, or who, signals the contemporary. Sherlock Holmes - An Online Adventure review: Shouted at by a hammy actor on Zoom? Lockdown’s low point Nick Curtis This Sherlock Holmes story, created by Oliver Lansley and Anthony Spargo for Les Enfants Terribles, isn’t really immersive or theatrical: it’s a bog-standard online murder mystery game that’s been rebranded to lure at-home audiences starved of live art. The success of these games, on screen or IRL, depends entirely on friends laughing along with the naffness, as well as copious quantities of alcohol, in my thankfully limited experience. Doing this one sober on a glitchy Zoom with strangers is just excruciating. You may notice there is no star rating on this review - that’s because I couldn’t even muster the enthusiasm for one.
