DHART helicopter lands in Newport after snowmobile crash

Published on February 24, 2021 in Newport/News NEWPORT Local emergency workers and a DHART helicopter were called out to Newport following a snowmobile crash this morning. The Newport Center Volunteer Fire Department (NCVFD) said they responded along with Newport Ambulance Service (NAS) to the area of Clark Mountain Road at around 11:45 a.m. Newport City Fire was requested to respond with a Ranger to help get to the victim and bring her out. Emergency workers say they were able to locate the victim quickly with the help of a local VAST member that had knowledge of the trails. A DHART helicopter was requested due to the long extraction time and nature of the injuries.

Police: Impaired driver attempted to flee through cornfield in Coventry

Published on COVENTRY The Orleans County Sheriff’s Department today released information relating to an incident in Coventry back in December of 2020, where a driver is alleged to have taken off through a cornfield to avoid arrest. Deputy Gonyaw says that while on duty on December 18, he witnessed a man known to him as 31-year-old Keith Sylvester Jr., operating a truck on Vermont Route 14 near the intersection on Vermont Route 5. He says he initiated a traffic stop when Sylvester attempted to elude through a cornfield off of Vermont Route 14. Deputy Gonyaw later located the truck in a cornfield on Currier Hill Road.

Two injured after head-on crash in Newport Center

NEWPORT CENTER Two Orleans county residents were injured following a crash in Newport Center yesterday. The incident took place on Vermont Route 100 near Collins Mill Road at around 2:00 p.m. Police say Tiffany Crandall, 41, of Charleston, was following a plow truck headed south when she attempted to pass the truck. Bruce Santaw, 69, of Jay, was traveling north when he collided head-on with Crandall in the northbound lane. Both drivers were removed from their vehicles and transported to North Country Hospital to be treated for what police describe as “non-life threatening injuries.” The Orleans County Sheriff’s Department, Newport Center Fire, and Newport Ambulance were all on scene.

NVRH receives $450,000 grant to build prevention network

Related Company:  NVRH and Umbrella Inc. partner to support prevention efforts throughout the Northeast Kingdom Vermont Business Magazine Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital (NVRH) has received the Vermont Prevention Center of Excellence’s Grant. This grant is a one-year grant opportunity with goals to reduce underage drinking, high-risk alcohol consumption, marijuana and tobacco misuse, prescription drug and stimulant misuse, and illicit stimulants and opioids. In order to build prevention capacity and infrastructure at the community, as well as regional levels, NVRH is partnering with Umbrella Inc. The grant, which totals $450,000, tackles two components of prevention: the promotion of healthy lifestyles and norms that reduce the risks associated with the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and the reduction of the impact of those at higher-than-average risk for substance misuse. This includes individuals currently experiencing problems related to use.
