BUCHAREST, ROMANIA A fire early Friday at a key hospital in Bucharest that also treats COVID-19 patients killed at least five people, authorities said. The fire broke out around 5a.m. (0300GMT) on the ground floor of the hospital and forced the evacuation of more than 100 people. Some hospital staff could be seen later still wearing protective suits and face masks after rushing out. An unspecified number of people were injured before firefighters put out the blaze, Romanian emergency services said in a preliminary report. It was not immediately clear what caused the fire. Later on Friday, dozens of people protested outside the hospital demanding resignations of top officials. Some lit candles for the victims.

At least four people died Friday after a fire broke out in Romania’s main hospital Matei Bals Hospital in Bucharest treating COVID-19 patients.
According to authorities, four patients died and several others were hurt, among the 102 people who were in the hospital wing.
The fire reportedly broke out on the ground floor around 5:00am (0300 GMT), said Orlando Schiopu, head of the inspectorate for emergency situations.
Romania is still reeling from a similar tragedy in November, when ten COVID patients died in a fire in an intensive care unit of a hospital in the northeastern town of Piatra Neamt. Five others injured in the fire later died of their injuries.
