thank you for that. we want to take you on the ground now and get more from orlando santos, the president of cnn in chile. he was thrown from his bed when this earthquake hit and he joins me now by phone. give us an update on exactly what you felt when this quake struck and where you are exactly. well, i m in the middle of santiago in the cnn chile newsroom at the moment. as i told you earlier, it was about 3:34 and one moment i m in bed and the next moment i m on the floor and things are falling around me, things are coming off the wall. as i was getting ready to go, and it lasted for a while, you know, quickly got dressed. i noticed, went through the rooms in my apartment. there wasn t anything left on a wall or any of the shelves. so it was scary and intimidating at first. of course, everything was dark because of the it was 3:30 or 4:00 in the morning. the first priority for me after making sure i was all right was
also, that our crews will get there. just like in haiti, we will get there. they re in route. we will have reports from the cnn crews on the ground likely within the next 12 or 24 hour sglsz no doubt. in the meantime, though, orlando santos, president of cnn in chile. he was at home in santiago when that quake struck. he said it knocked him out of his bed. things came crashing down off the walls. he joined me by phone. here s a listen to what he had to say. the situation started a little after 3:30 this morning. about 3:40 or so. there was a violent shaking in santiago, no question about it. i literally got knocked out of bed and on to the floor. and it was pretty clear because of the length of the earthquake that it was going to be a major earthquake. the city almost immediately went dark. looking out from the balcony of my apartment, everything went black. and the earthquake lasted at
it s the regional capital of chile at that point until moved up to santiago. so right now we have an unconfirmed report that the major bridge between the north and southern sections of the country is out, or at least not operable. i don t know if it s actually, if there s damage to it to the point where it s fallen apart or whether it s simply so much debris and stuff that you can t get from one end of the country to the other if you were driving. that was cnn chile president santos. that was taped earlier, of course, to give you an update on the fatalities right now, 78 confirmed fatalities. we do expect that number to rise if we have great insight earlier in the program in a meteorologist in hawaii, kitv meteorologist at one of our affiliates. his name is justin fujioka.
