The responsible party, Orion Breweries, disclosed that the discolored water was a consequence of a leak from their factory in the vicinity. The leak was coming from a cooling system which uses a red-tinted liquid called propylene glycol, an item often used in food coloring.
U.S. health authorities have deemed the chemical propylene glycol, used in food dye and as an ingredient in coolant, as "generally recognized as safe."
While the discolouration caused several people to fear for the water s cleanliness, experts have said the product which caused the colour change is not necessarily to be feared.
