I was born and raised in Kansas City, MO. I moved to Springfield, IL in 1977 at the age of 15.

My mother re-married and we relocated to Springfield, IL.
How Were Race Relations In Your Hometown & How Do They Compare To Central Illinois?
Race relationships in my community mirrored the country’s experience during the 1970’s. The neighborhoods were dominated by one ethnic group. The blacks were on one side of town while the whites were on the other. Very seldom did I interact with members of the dominate group. The community where I grew up, was essentially self -sufficient, i.e., banks, restaurants, recreational, educational and childcare centers. Black families were thriving with two parent homes, neighborhood schools, blacked owned business, and community centers. The only time I encountered another race was outside of my neighborhood.
