Oregon State Rep. Mark Meek stood in the grass on the Capitol grounds, not far from where a Vietnam War Memorial is planned, his voice trailing off.
He was talking about his dad, a staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps who did two tours in Vietnam. I remember growing up in the 70s and him not feeling good about it, Meek said. After he died, I found out he earned a Bronze Star. He never celebrated it or even talked about it.
Meek gets emotional hearing about plans for a memorial recognizing an entire generation of service members, including his father, who didn t receive the welcome home they deserved.
