SALEM, Ore. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown and state health leaders said during a briefing on Friday that a fourth wave of COVID-19 has reached the state. Because of the rise in cases and the increase in hospitalizations over the past month, at least 12 counties are at risk of moving back into the extreme risk category, Brown said.
Such a move would ban indoor dining at restaurants and significantly reduce the number of people who can be inside a gym or indoor entertainment space.
The state s weekly report for April 12-18 announced 4,742 new COVID cases during that week. That’s a 27% jump over the previous week and the fourth week in a row in which COVID cases increased by 20% or more. As of Friday morning, there were 276 people hospitalized in the state because of COVID-19, a 9% increase over the past week and a 109% increase since March 1, according to state epidemiologist Dr. Dean Sidelinger.

In Portland, the Latino Network and other organizations are demanding that more be done to speed up the vaccination process among the Latino population, saying that only 6% have been inoculated so far.
They are asking for local, state, and federal health systems to acknowledge what they call failures in the vaccination process among the Latino population in Oregon, and calling for changes.
Among the demands, they d like to see a Spanish language registration hotline, vaccination events in culturally specific locations for minorities, and funds to hire staff for Latino community vaccination events.

Governor Kate Brown today detailed her support for House Bill 2164, Cover All People, in a hearing of the House Committee on Health Care. The bill, a product of the collaborative work of the Governor’s Racial Justice Council Health Equity Committee, would allow the Oregon Health Authority to create a state-based program to provide high-quality coverage for medically-underserved people, regardless of their immigration status––including legal permanent residents, young adults who age out of Oregon’s Cover All Kids program, DACA recipients, and undocumented adults. The program, modeled on the Oregon Health Plan, would focus on serving parents who have children or dependents in the Cover All Kids program as a minimum first step.
