The property management and garbage companies for Heidi Manor Apartments in Northeast Portland settled their parts of a wrongful death and personal injury lawsuit, but civil claims remain active against the owners of the building. Three people were killed and another man was injured from severe burns suffered in the July 4, 2021 fire.
Fire agencies urge Oregonians to consider alternatives to burning yard debris

SALEM, Ore. (KTVZ) – Oregon fire departments and prevention groups urge everyone to dispose of yard debris, rather than burn it. This year’s warm and dry conditions have already caused fires to burn many acres quickly. Rather than burning yard debris, you can help prevent wildfires by chipping or recycling it.
The Oregon Department of Forestry has declared fire season for parts of the state. This year, about 180 fires have already burned about 1,900 acres. April’s dry, warm conditions prompted some county-wide burn bans.
“It’s going to get scary over the next few months as things get drier and drier,” Captain Nicco Holt, Williams Fire Rescue, told NBC5. “The awareness starts now.”
Oregon Department of Forestry says it responded to six fires on April 28th – largely caused by out of control debris burns. It noted that most previously burned piles can likely reignite and cause fires if its still hot.
ODF strongly recommends homeowners to dispose of yard debris rather than burning. However if burning is the only other option, it recommended the following tips:
