certainly has. this video coming to us from japan tv. showing japan s prime minister arriving to tour all the damage in japan. he says he is sending 50 thousand troops for rescue and recovery efforts. in the u.s. we watched at the tsunami triggered warnings in hawaii and up and down the west coast. miguel almaguer has more on the impact here at home. reporter: in four california counties a state of emergency. more than nine hours after the quake hit japan, the california/oregon border faced the first waves of the tsunami. it swept a 25-year-old man out to sea. he is presumed dead. the destruction was measured across the west coast. chaotic. lost everything. my boats, jet skis, everything.
foot surge, and no water going into the hotel areas, waikiki and diamond head, and maui, the water was actually 6 feet high. now, as you go on down and you think, that increases the threat for the west coast, it truly does, the numbers we re expecting, by the way, upwards of 6 to 8 feet, increase scent city, in northern california, just south of the oregon border. crescent city is a harbor, the town built and the harbor and expect waves 6 to 8 feet and now evacuated thousands of people from crescent city, california especially the low-lying areas and we re getting word of evacuations now along the oregon coast, and we just called up there, and found out there is a line of traffic now, along the coastal roads in oregon, people wanting to get out. the times you see there on the screen, by the way, are east coast. so west coast times, the first
in some areas. as you know, southern california isnd a tsunami advisory. northern california, which is north of santa barbara under a tsunami warning and the focus has been on a place called crescent city, california, population 20,000, south of the oregon border, 365 miles north of san francisco and the area is all built along a hear, very susceptible to tsunamis, we have been told they ve evacuated the area, and we have talked to a couple of gas stations who say they have been inundated with people since midnight last night. trying to flee what could be a big tsunami coming their way. we have also called businesses right along the harbor. four of them to be exact. none of them have answered, which is good news but also is a dearth of information coming out and we will not see pictures out of there for quite some time, what you are looking at here is

seems like a pretty specific warning here that s going out with times. have you ever seen anything quite like this with regard to a tsunami warning? yes twice. twice since 2004 i have. one that hit some islands in the south pacific, and the other time a small tsunami that came to hawaii that was very, very small. i remember they had cameras up where you can see it coming in. thankfully it didn t cause any damage at all it was so small, but you could see the line in the water. it was a year and a half ago. we were getting ready to get on a plane and go. we were watching on television and thankfully there was no major damage. now i am being told from the weather channel that the warning is in affect from point conception to the washington, oregon border. it is official. that s the third source. it is no longer a watch for much of california. it is now a warning. if you are in a low-lying area
