Members of an organization called Wildlife Pro were in the middle of marine research off Hokkaido when a local fisherman spotted orcas trapped by sea ice.
The researchers are also not able to reach the orcas due to the large packs of floating ice. Since there is no wind, the ice packs are not moving so that space can be made for the pods to escape.
Over the past couple weeks, rare sightings of orca whales have been popping up in Southern California. From the Palos Verdes Peninsula down to San Diego, the black-and-white killer whales have been seen in pods, hunting dolphins and hamming it up for cameras. But this orca below…this one woke up .
