A mail carrier in New Jersey admitted Thursday that he threw away mail, including 99 general election ballots sent to West Orange residents, according to.
In an earlier hearing, U.S. Attorney Sara Merin said there was “no indication that there was any political motive.”
In addition to the ballots, there were 627 pieces of first-class, 873 pieces of standard-class, two pieces of certified mail and 276 campaign flyers from local candidates for West Orange Town Council and Board of Education recovered.
Beauchene pleaded guilty to one count of desertion of mail, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine. A sentencing date has not yet been set.

A U.S. Postal Service (USPS) mail carrier from New Jersey on Thursday admitted to discarding 99 general election ballots and hundreds of other pieces of mail last fall.
Nicholas Beauchene, 26, pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of desertion of mails, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced in a statement.
He faces a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine when he is sentenced at a later date.

Beauchene said he discarded 1,875 pieces of mail into dumpsters on the days of Sept. 28, Oct. 1 and Oct. 2, 2020. He was the postal worker assigned to deliver those batches of mail to customers in West Orange and Orange.

Nicholas Beauchene, 26, of Kearny, pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge Cathy L. Waldor in Newark federal court to an information charging him with one count of desertion of mails.
Beauchene admitted that on September 28th, October 1st, and October 2, 2020, he discarded into dumpsters in North Arlington and West Orange 1,875 pieces of mail that he was assigned to deliver to postal customers in West Orange and Orange.
This mail included 627 pieces of first-class mail, 873 pieces of standard class mail, two pieces of certified mail, 99 general election ballots destined for residents in West Orange, and 276 campaign flyers from local candidates for West Orange Town Council and Board of Education.
