Spring planting progressing well in South Dakota; Soil and crops still need rain

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 22% very short, 41% short, 37% adequate, and 0% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 21% very short, 45% short, 33% adequate, and 1% surplus.   Field Crops Report: Corn planted was 93%, ahead of 83% last year, and well ahead of 72% for the five-year average. Emerged was 55%, ahead of 41% last year, and well ahead of 34% average. Soybeans planted was 83%, well ahead of 59% last year and 45% average. Emerged was 28%, ahead of 17% last year and 12% average. Winter wheat condition rated 7% very poor, 20% poor, 43% fair, 30% good, and 0% excellent. Winter wheat headed was 9%, near 7% last year and 10% average.

Emerged was 19%, near 18% last year, and ahead of 14% average. Soybeans planted was 66%, well ahead of 38% last year and 24% average. Emerged was 6%, near 7% last year and 3% average. Winter wheat condition rated 8% very poor, 15% poor, 45% fair, 31% good, and 1% excellent.

Spring wheat planted was 81%, well ahead of 57% last year and 54% average. Emerged was 46%, well ahead of 16% last year and 26% average. Oats planted was 74%, ahead of 68% last year and 55% average. Emerged was 31%, ahead of 23% last year, and near 29% average.
