anybody that comes into the dmv to get a license. and yet we ve created an opt-in system in many states around the country. make it opt-out, meaning the simultaneous component of that law actually becomes real. make it an opt-out system where everybody is automatically registered as soon as they come into the dmv. if they want to opt out later, they can. another thing that they can do, we have all these federal aid programs that are administered through the states like medicare and medicaid and various other programs. use the administrative data from those programs and release them to the states so they can automatically register those people to vote as well. that s the only one within the purview of the president. he can order states not to limit access to absentee ballots, not to limit access to early voting. certainly we are in unprecedented times. we are still in the midst of a global pandemic.
side, but, um, i don t know how accurate it is, but i can tell you that fire came in so fast. there was it wasn t that notifications were delayed. it was that there was no time to give them. reporter: is there anything that could have been done, though? is there anything that should have been done in retrospect? you know, the notification system where you get that text on your phone, it s an opt-in system. it s automatic for land lines, but cell phones have to opt-in, and so i think we probably could have done more to sign people up to get them to opt into that system so more people would have gotten that notice. housing is a big problem. there s just not enough housing for everyone in butte county. and so people are having to go far away to find places to stay in the short term.
become the first state in the country where it is easier to be registered than not. it s an opt-out system instead of an opt-in system. as the tide of voting laws in this country has been rushing the other way, oregon is first to push this hard to get more people to vote, not fewer. oregon blessed thou among women, politicians. this is groundbreaking. joining us now for the interview is the new governor of the state of oregon kate brown. governor brown, thanks for your time tonight. thank you so much. i was delighted to hear your recap of our new motor voter law. did i explain the change in the law correctly? no other state has done this so i m learning it just from you. that is correct. however, louisiana is essentially doing the same thing with their 16 and 17-year-olds. the first state to have it happen to all of our potentially registered voters in oregon we re very excited about the
say a modest rate, but we re offering some compensation for the risks people are undertaking. dean, i want you to jump in. i like what he said on the first part, that we have an opt-in system. presumed consent. other countries do that, it s a good thing. the idea for having compensation for any organs goes against people with more money will get better treatment in the system. we have to have fairness in the system. fairness in which a lot of people die because they don t get organs is not fair at all. it s very successful, it s very safe. let me say, i talked to a lot of doctors about this story, if you re touched by this story, become an organ donor. thank you very much.
