News Five’s Isani Cayetano has excerpts from day one.   Isani Cayetano, Reporting Kicking off the 2021 budget debate this morning was Opposition Leader Patrick Faber.  The area representative for Collet spoke for almost an hour, having a go at the government’s fiscal plan for the next twelve months.  Faber was critical of the financial blueprint for a number of reasons, beginning with the leadership of the new prime minister.

Feb 3, 2021 Oscar Sabido A new Elections and Boundaries Commission held its inaugural meeting today, despite its members not being formally sworn-in to office. As we reported on Tuesday, the E.B.C. is being chaired by Senior Counsel Oscar Sabido who replaces fellow attorney Estevan Perrera in that post. Joining him as members of the newly formed Commission are Orlando Espat, Conrad Lewis, Phillipa Griffith Bailey and Alberto August. Chairman Sabido and members Espat and Lewis are appointed on the advice of Prime Minister John Briceño, while August is appointed on the advice of Opposition Leader Patrick Faber.  The composition of a new Elections and Boundaries Commission comes a few short weeks ahead of the March third municipal elections.

Justice Minnet Hafiz-Bertram is Acting President of Court of Appeal

Dec 30, 2020 Justice Minnet Hafiz-Bertram Justice Minnet Hafiz-Bertram has been elevated to Acting President of the Belize Court of Appeal.  Earlier today, during a virtual swearing-in, the high court judge was administered the oath of office by Governor General Sir Colville Young.  Justice Hafiz-Bertram will remain in that capacity until further notice from the prime minister who will advise the G.G. of his appointee after meeting with Opposition Leader Patrick Faber.  Justice Hafiz-Bertram is originally from Guyana and took her seat on the bench of the Court of Appeal in 2013.  Her swearing-in was witnessed by Attorney General Magali Marin-Young.   Viewers please note: This Internet newscast is a verbatim transcript of our evening television newscast.
