Faculty Assembly meeting hosts panel on reopening, COVID-19 response

Northwestern plans to lift the testing mandate for fully vaccinated and asymptomatic community members this summer, according to Vice President for Operations Luke Figora. Figora was joined by Feinberg Profs. Richard D’Aquila and Michael Ison at a Wednesday Faculty Assembly meeting on a panel that addressed faculty questions about NU’s COVID-19 response and planned return to in-person operation. NU’s forthcoming decisions, like the testing mandate, will follow public health guidelines as Illinois enters Phase 5 of reopening. The University has not yet made a decision on indoor mask mandates, vaccination requirements for faculty and staff, potential vaccination passports and use of the Symptom Tracker app this fall, Figora said.

What you can do when vaccinated, according to the CDC and NU

As of mid-April, Illinois residents over 16 are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, and Northwestern is prioritizing students for first-dose appointments. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also revised guidelines for fully vaccinated individuals on masking, social distancing and quarantining. NU has not revised its COVID-19 guidelines for fully vaccinated students nor has it announced a vaccination requirement for Fall 2021. The University does, however, recommend students disclose their vaccination status to help inform ongoing rule changes, according to an April 16 email from Vice President for Operations Luke Figora.  “By disclosing your vaccination status, you are helping us…be prepared to respond to changing public health guidelines associated with vaccination status,” Figora wrote in the email.
