Elon Musk has stoked fears that OpenAI doing something potentially dangerous to humanity was the reason for Sam Altman’s surprise ouster from the artificial intelligence startup.
The co-founders of Anthropic, who were also executives at OpenAI until 2020, had broken from their employer over disagreements regarding how to ensure AI’s safe development and governance.
Venture capital investors usually hold board seats or voting power in their portfolio companies but OpenAI is controlled by its nonprofit parent company OpenAI Nonprofit, which according to OpenAI's website was created to benefit "humanity, not OpenAI investors."
