The 47th class of Mass Media Science & Technology Fellows heading out to newsrooms around the country this summer is part of one of the oldest ongoing science communication initiatives by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
Since 1975, more than 750 scientists, engineers, and mathematicians in the fellowship have spent 10 weeks reporting and writing news stories at media outlets around the US. For the participants, the program is a way to explore a new career or improve their science communication skills. But alumni and AAAS staff say the fellowship also expands the public audience for scientific news.
“Journalism, writing, communicating about science these are all critical for shaping public understanding of the world around us,” said AAAS CEO Sudip Parikh to the newest fellowship class on 2 June.

María Paula Rubiano is a freelance science journalist based in Colombia who writes about biodiversity, environmental justice, food, and climate change. She started her career reporting on Colombia’s diverse ecosystems for El Espectador newspaper. Since graduating from New York University s masters program in Science, Health and Environmental Reporting, her work has appeared in Popular Science, Audubon, Gastro Obscura, The Open Notebook, Mutante.org, and more.

I recently completed my PhD in Psychology specializing in Developmental Science at Florida International university, where I studied neurological and cognitive predictors of individual differences in young children s learning and memory abilities. Along the way, I earned a minor in Quantitative Methods and a certificate in Women s and Gender Studies. But writing was my first love ever since I was a kid journaling in her diary and writing poems about unrequited crushes. I began my venture into science communication when I was invited, along with my graduate advisor, to write a lay summary of one of our research studies for the website Atlas of Science. I then sought other opportunities to write for general audiences, interning at my university s newspaper, FIU News, as well as The National Association of Science Writers Virtual Mentoring Program.
