The sessions are on Thursday, July 29, Tuesday Aug. 3 and Thursday, Aug. 5. They will be held virtually at 2 p.m. and in-person at 3 p.m. David Ashley, employment placement specialist at Open Door Group in Kamloops, said individuals who qualify will receive free gear and training, which includes two days worth of S100 and S185 Fire Suppression course work. Ashley said the courses are the minimum requirement for firefighting. “We’re facilitating that and getting it set up for next week here,” he said, noting other course work, like first aid, may also be available. The organization is not directly hiring firefighters but has connections with employers for individuals, once the necessary training is completed.

Todd Harding has seen a lot change in his 20 years working on disability issues in Kamloops.
Harding, who works for the provincial government, was able to vote independently in the civic election for the first time in 30 years last November, thanks to an initiative he worked on for a full year to make braille ballot templates available.
He lost his eyesight in a car accident when he was 24. We were the first city in the history of British Columbia to have a completely accessible civic election, said Harding. Access in general is becoming much, much, much better.
