Paava Kadhaigal movie review: Netflix Tamil anthology deftly explores why the regular is right and the different is sinful

Minor spoilers ahead What is sin? Who is the sinner? these are two fundamental questions that Paava Kadhaigal, Netflix’s Tamil edition of Lust Stories, endeavours to answer. The title, which translates to stories of sin would have us believe that this is about deviants and the society they are in. In actuality though, the anthology is more about the violence of the norm, and who gains from perpetuating it.  In Sudha Kongara’s film Thangam, a thug asks, “Why does he keep strutting around like a girl?” about Sattar, a transwoman. Without batting an eyelid, Saravanan responds, “Does he ask why we horse around like men?”

Paava Kadhaigal Review: Sudha Kongara s Thangam Is Precious In A Jewel That Has Other Didactic Gems Too

Paava Kadhaigal Review: Star Rating: 3.5/5 Stars (Three and a half Stars) Advertisement ‘Discrimination’ is a word that has become a part of our vocabulary for years now and practised in our society for as long as we know. Paava Kadhaigal that hits Netflix today brings together 4 of the most woke and noteworthy Tamil filmmakers Sudha Kongara, Vignesh Shivan, Gautham Menon and Vetrimaaran to create an anthology that portrays shades of discrimination and what it costs to the people who dream. While Sudha’s Thangam left me shattered, read on to know what I felt about the others. Thangam Advertisement Heads up, this is THE best short in Paava Kadhaigal that is raw and doesn’t require polished edges. Sudha Kongara, for the ones who have seen her work, has a perspective that takes you through the evil and leaves you at a possible redemption. With Thangam, Kongara does not take that route, rather she leaves you in the dystopia that we are living in for ages now. Centre

The Tamil-language anthology film follows Bombay Talkies, about the Hindi film industry,

Oor Iravu in Paava Kadhaigal is based on honour killing Oor Iravu in Paava Kadhaigal is based on honour killing Last Updated: Thu, Dec 17th, 2020, 10:54:31hrs Oor Iravu is the title of National Award-winning director Vetrimaaran s portion in the Netflix anthology Paava Kadhaigal. Now, from Vetrimaaran s official statement, it s clear that Oor Iravu is based on honor killing. While it is essentially a story about a father and daughter, the concept of the film kept evolving along the way. My subconscious thought was to have a microscopic view on the pain that is inflicted by family members on one another for the sake of honor.
