For the First Time the Assembly of First Nations has a Female National Chief

By Brad Jennings Jul 8, 2021 | 5:12 PM RoseAnne Archibald has become the first woman to be named the Assembly of First Nations national chief. After five rounds of voting, only two candidates remained in the running, RoseAnne Archibald and Reginald Bellerose. The needed 60 per cent voting threshold still had not been met.  Shortly after the sixth round of voting got underway, it was announced that Bellerose had conceded and RoseAnne Archibald was named the new AFN national chief. Archibald is from Taykwa Tagamou Nation, has 31 years of experience in First Nations politics, and spent the last three years as the Ontario Regional Chief.

'Action is needed' — Anishinabek Nation chief

Article content Reginald Niganobe has taken the role of Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief at a pivotal, and certainly a challenging time in history. A series of discoveries of unmarked grave sites on the grounds of former residential schools have stirred up painful memories for survivors, their families and First Nations communities which are still affected by the legacy of residential schools and the emotional, physical and sexual abuse inflicted on the children who went there, in addition to forced loss of language and culture and disconnection from their heritage.
