ensembleNEWSRQ closes season with contemporary classic strings concert

Staff Report After a delay of a few weeks, ensembleNEWSRQ closes its season Monday night with the concert “Sun Colors,” which will be presented live via streaming. Violinist Samantha Bennett, one of the founders and co-artistic director of the contemporary classical music group, will be featured in the program with violinist Jennifer Best Takeda, violist Derek Mosloff and cellist Natalie Helm.  enSRQ describes the concert as a way to celebrate “the warmth and diversity of contemporary string writing.” It features Reena Esmail’s 2018 “Darshan” for solo violin; Michael Djupstrom’s 2011 piece “Daydreams and Nightvisions” for violin and cello; Jessica Meyer’s “I Only Speak of the Sun,” a 2018 composition for string trio and Tan Dun’s “8 Colors” for string quartet.

Case Where College Got Away with Killing a Student s Free Speech Rights Goes all the way to the Supreme Court

6222313693001 A Georgia college threatened to arrest a student for sharing his faith on campus back in 2016. After that threat, Chike Uzuegbunam and another Gwinnett College student sued the school. The case was eventually dropped because Gwinnett ended its restrictive speech policy. So the college didn’t have to pay at all for the damage it did to Uzuegbunam’s free speech rights. That lack of accountability and justice resulted in the Supreme Court taking up the issue Tuesday. Since Georgia Gwinnett College stopped blocking speech after it was sued, it argued before the Supreme Court it shouldn’t be penalized. As attorney Andrew Pinson put it, “The way that this case was resolved was a good thing. Litigation prompted college officials to review their policies and just 10 weeks later to revise them. That maximized and respected First Amendment rights on campus, not just for petitioners, but for all students.”
