Dec 19, 2020 12:55:50 PM The people of Nasavu in Bua on Vanua Levu had a sleepless night on Thursday as they heard loud crashing sounds of tins outside their evacuation centre. At least sixty people were at the community hall when Tropical Cyclone Yasa made landfall in the Bua province with winds up to 345 kilometers per hour. Nasavu villager Miriama Nakauvadra said houses were flattened to the ground and home utensils and furniture scattered like the homes just blew up. In an exclusive interview with

Tropical Cyclone Yasa brings flooding and winds to the Bua Province. The NDMO has imposed another curfew from 5pm Friday through to 6am Saturday for Vanua Levu, and from 8pm Friday to 5am Saturday for the rest of the country. Covid-19 curfews – from 11pm to 4am - will return after that. The centre of the cyclone moved over Vanua Levu Thursday evening and overnight. By 7am Friday, Fiji Meteorological Service had downgraded it to a category 4 event, and by 10am to category 3. More than 850,000 people, or more than 95 per cent of the country’s population, were in the direct path of the cyclone.

Evacuees within a school block in Nasavu, Bua, had to be moved to a separate school block after the roof of their refuge was blown away at the height of TC Yasa this evening.
Nasavu villager Miriama Ratu said elderlies in the village and other villagers were evacuated to the teachers’ quarters in the school compound.
Ms Ratu said at around 8pm, winds abated again before it picked up force.
“Compared to TC Winston that devastated the village in 2016, TC Yasa was stronger and lasted much longer,” she told
Fiji Times Online tonight.
Another villager Kiri Maiburesa confirmed that six houses were destroyed by strong winds this evening.
