but indicated also that we were not taking anything off the table. nothing has changed. in fact our approach to the provision of weapons, material, training to the ukrainians has followed the exigencies of the conflict. so in the first phase, when russian forces were bearing down on kyiv, the key capability they needed were stingers and javelins. we provided them. in the second phase, when it was more of a ground fight in the donbass, the need was artillery and triple sevens 155 ammunition. as the fight has evolved, the capabilities we have provided ukraine have evolved, and what the president was really getting at back in february is that we were in the midst of a massive effort to ensure that ukraine would have what it needed to be able to launch this counteroffensive this summer, and that was everything from tanks to bradley fighting vehicles to further home ares
it s fine, we survive somehow. and how have the children been affected by the war? translator: they re worried that something might happen to them. reporter: those fears won t go, not until the russians are gone. sam kiley, cnn. cnn s nada bashir joins us with more on the fighting in ukraine, again, nada, it was a busy night in the skies with debris from an air attack falling really indiscriminately. what more are we learning at this hour? reporter: absolutely, paula, we are learning from regional military officials in kyiv that russia launched a massive drone attack on the capital overnight thursday into saturday morning, as you mentioned, some of that debris landing in residential areas, now, calling to those regional military officials in a statement ukraine was successful
in targeting and destroying all of those drones overhead, this does mark the 11th round of air strikes by the russian armed fors on kyiv, just since the beginning of may, so we are really seeing a ratcheting up of those attacks on the capital. the ukrainian armed forces say they believe russia is attempting to deplete ukraine of its air defense resources, but also to place civilians in a state of sustained psychological distress. now, of course there were those warnings and air raid sirens across the capital calling on citizens to remain in their shelters. at this stage authorities say they are still carrying out assessments. there have been no casualties reported, although some infrastructural damage has been reported with that debris falling from those air attacks that were destroyed, including one residential block in which the roof sustained some fire damage but that was quickly extinguished but of course this is a huge concern given the civilian population across kyiv.
their summit. it s likely that the war in ukraine will top the agenda, after a new spate of aerial attacks on kyiv and an anticipated ukrainian cou nteroffe nsive. ukraine s leader, volodymyr zelensky, willjoin the meeting by video on sunday. also of importantance is china and trade. leaders are concerned about china s footprint in the region and say they will propose ways to work together on the issue. they will also discuss the growing pressure that taiwan is underfrom china, dealing with threats of military aggression and economic coercion such as blockades. in hiroshima, earlier today, japanese prime minister, fumio kishida, who s hosting the summit, kicked off the conference with a few meetings to discuss bilateral agreemements with select allies. within the next hour or so g7 leaders will gather for a family photo, marking day two of the summit. their spouses will be entertained with traditional japanese dance
the commander in chief of the armed forces of ukraine also said overnight russia attacked ukraine with 18 missiles and various types all across the country they were intercepted by air defense forces. we are told from the russian defense ministry claiming they destroyed one of those american patriot missile systems. we ll see what the u.s. says about that. cnn s international diplomatic editor nic robertson is live in eastern ukraine. tell what you say you ve been seeing on the ground. reporter: so what we understand is these missiles that were targeted on kyiv came in from the north, from the south and from the east. launched by air, launched from land and also launched by the sea. perhaps most significant, six of them launched from aircraft were hypersonic, these super fast mice siels that are very hard to intercept. all of them intercepted. the cruise missiles that were fired from ships in the black sea to the south of ukraine, all of those intercepted or neutralized. there were t
