from the center of houma where some of the emergency crews can finally make their way out. what we ve been experiencing for the past several hours now are severe winds topping 100 miles per hour that have been just barreling down on houma relentlessly. around me you can see some of these downed trees. at the beginning when we were doing live reporting out here, pamela, i initially stood over there. then the trees started coming down in that direction. we started seeing debris coming from we can t even figure out coming from where, so we had to move from that particular position to where i m standing now. so we ve seen downed trees throughout the area. visibility still very difficult at this point because of all of the pounding rain and high winds that continue continue to barrel through this area even now at this hour. we re told, if you can believe it or not, as bad as things look now, that within the next hour

the center of hurricane ida is passing just east of houma and winds are continuing to pick up in new orleans. that s where cnn s brian todd is right now. how are things shaping up there? looks like it s getting worse as we anticipated where you are. reporter: it is getting worse, jim. i can tell you as we look down in the french quarter here. look at the flooding starting to occur here. we just saw some debris flying off of a roof over that way. there s debris all over the place. you ve got to keep your eyes and ears peeled because things are just flying around here.

causing a levee to overtop in plaquemines parish. tonight, more than half a million people are without power. that number expected to go up as ida s winds are still thrashing the gulf coast, knocking down trees and power lines as it blows inland. one person i spoke to earlier in houma said she is terrified right now. timothy sonnier is a sheriff in l louisiana. your parish has been feeling the brunt of ida for hours. what is your concern now? right now the wind still continues. we had issued a mandatory evacuation a couple days ago. there s still a lot of people back there. a lot of people back, and we re getting calls of some roofs blown off of a lot of homes. what we ve been able to do is do a little assessment between some of the gaps of wind, but it hand let up much.

now it s hitting areas like houma, those tough bands of the storm are hitting new orleans. now our reporters are really seeing the devastating effects of this storm. we re seeing it firsthand. and the conditions are going to deteriorate rapidly over the next half hour or so for our crews. especially for jason. he should probably get to his safe place now. that inner eye wall approaches him. approaches houma and you talk about being in the eye, the calmness. the back side of that eye wall is going to hit you without any warning. it s very different than the front half of the storm coming where the winds gradually increase, rain increases. when you hit that back side of the eye wall and you re outside trying to take pictures of the eye, you ll have no warning. it s incredibly dangerous. take note of that. the winds are going to be fierce over the next several hours for places like houma, new orleans. you re on the east side of the storm. the eye will pass just to your west. so we re go
