is. that s the eye of the storm making landfall as we speak. once this part goes right over biloxi, it ll be an official landfall. but right now the worst of the conditions are on that northern eye wall. and if we have hurricane force winds, that s where they re going to be located. the rest are going to be tropical force winds. nothing to sneeze at. those can also take out power lines. biloxi now, 4 to 5 feet of storm surge. literally the gulf of mexico moving into shore. these could go a little bit higher in the next hour or so and then things will begin to wind down along with the winds as well. once this thing makes landfall, the winds will diminish. the center of the storm, the worst of nate happening right
exactly. that s exactly right. look at this here. we are inside part of the windows here. you can see the surge is halfway up inside this entrance and there s some escalators straight ahead. there s the surge. i see that. i see that. so storm surge is no joke. this is what they always warn about. they still had the storm surge potential. this is nothing like we saw with katrina. mike theiss, stay safe. we appreciate these pictures of of biloxi, mississippi. thank you all for being us with us on this special saturday. i m brooke baldwin. our coverage continues next with michael holmes.
it is incredibly the different pictures and what is still yet to come, ed lavandera, in mobile. let s talk about what exactly nate is doing. my goodness, those pictures out of boxty, that was really the first we had seen of that storm surge really picking up. first pictures of what really hurricane nate is capable of. i tell you what, gulf of mexico is now in biloxi. it has come in with 4 or 5 feet of storm surge, and it has continued to push in. what you see here, this big gap, that s the eye of the hurricane. that s the center of the storm. so the worst of the weather is actually now moving in two forms here. not only is the water coming in from the gulf, but also we re looking at the strongest winds. those are going to be contained in the outer bands here. we re going to see 75, 80 miles
bit. for people who are tuning in, though, in your neck of the woods, what do you want them to know? what we want them to know is you must continue to be individuvigilant in your respect for this storm. that means taking precautions such as not going outside your house. by all means continue to monitor the weather reports. continue to know this could turn at any moment, a tornado could pop up. there are a lot of things we like to think we re in the middle of it and it s not going it get any worse, but we don t know that. and we just have to go by the best information we have. what about precautions since it s about 11:15 just about your time there in biloxi. pitch-dark, people will be waking up the next morning not quite knowing how bad or how much wind damage, what then? we re hoping everyone will continue to respect the curfew which right now remains in
essentially disorganized. i was joking with the governor earlier saying oh, it s like government. so what we re seeing is the tides are starting to hit against the sea wall, hit our highway 90. we re seeing some low points of highway 90, where the water is covering the highway. we have some storm surge on the northern side of the biloxi peninsula. but other than we ve been able to keep our police officers out on the roads. they re making sure that our cu curfew is being respected by the citizenry. we ve got our boats moved utof harbors. like i said, we re hoping this is the worst of it. just going to be a rain event with some isolated flooding, aceilated power outage, and that seems to be the story here in biloxi. let s all just hope and wait and hold our breath a little
