their guns. it s much easier to put people away and forget about them and not remember that they have rights, too, rather than take away some guns from people and that s a balance got to go, gentlemen. i have to go. thank you very much. coming up, a witness to the shooting was legally carrying a concealed weapon. he tells me why he didn t fire. before earning enough cash back from bank of america to take their act to the next level. before earning 1% cash back everywhere, every time. 2% back at the grocery store. and 3% back on gas. vince of the flying branzinos got a bankamericard cash rewards credit card, because he may earn his living jumping through hoops, but he d rather not earn cash back that way. that s the spectacle of rewarding connections. apply online or at a bank of america near you. nothing artificial. just real roasted turkey. carved thick. that s the right way to make a good turkey sandwich.
i deal with mass killers at the job i came from and a lot of people enjoy the notoriety and we get mass killers from northern california. my focus, the fact we re having this discussion is that we really need to stop this stuff and we talk about there shouldn t be these mass shootings and i think there is a way to stop it if we would identify the problem. the problem is not identifying, naming shooters, the problem is untreated mental illness and it s not even guns. i think we need to set aside the issue of guns. the question is can we treat the one half of 1% of the population that has paranoid schizophrenia and generally all of those people do the shooting. which side will we be on? i m for shooting or i m for treatment? you have to go one of those options. we have to decide and actually put an end to this. i disagree completely. i think the idea we can identify in advance and predict who is going to do it, sure, almost
names up front. you don t want to give other people looking for glory an incenti incentive. there are many reasons of availability of guns to break down the mental health system but glorifying them is one clause. i remember this coming up, started with a campaign of a shooting which i cover and boston marathon dzhokhar tsarnaev. is there a fine line between reporting and glorifying? there is. you do report names when they are relevant, organization affiliations, maybe sometimes ethnicities when it s relevant but just to put the name out there and to focus on the killer is probably in the end counterproductive. dr. seager, i want to ask you about this as a psychiatrist, do you think there is a quest for notoriety. is america s culture of fame producing this?
these, some of the victims. that s the kind of place that this is but as a result, i think there s been some really remarkable care. i mean, these were bad injuries and now you have two patients left, most had gone home. sanjay, here we go talking about this again. there is some indication the shooter may have had a mental health issue so once again, as i said, we re talking about this mental health in the wake of a mass shooting. what do you make of this? reporter: it s funny. i can remember the last time you and i talked about this and there is always this position, right, don because when we talk, first of all, we hardly talk about mental illness unless it s in the wake of tragedy and we remind people who have mental illness are more likely to be victims of violence, more likely to be victims than perpetrators but then obviously, somebody who does something like this must have some component of mental illness to have done this in the first place.
