chris: will the bill pass? i think the bill will pass and i do believe that senators gil igrand and schumer are working night and day to make it happen. chris: he was blaming you for the filibusters, one of your objections is that harry reid put too many items on the agenda in the lame duck session. i want to play what you said and one of the first responders who now has cancer. it is impossible to all of the things that the majority leaders laid out without disrespecting the institution and without disrespecting one of the two holiest of holidays for christians. i m here to say that you won t find a single new york city firefighter who considers it a sign of disrespect to work in a new york city firehouse on christmas eve or cistmas day. chris: senator, everyone, everyone praises the first responders as heros. you say you are skeptical about this bill. why not find a way to give
holiday and whether people are going home or not going home, and listen to senator john mccain and what he said today. i tell my colleagues that we are getting tired of it. we grow weary, and it is not that we want to quote be home for christmas. i spent six christmass in a row away from home. but what it is about is responding to the american people. now, the american people yesterday in a resounding victory for those who voted november 2nd, rejected the omnibus appropriations bill. i believe that some of the issues before the senate deserve the participation of the newly elected members of the united states senate and house. candy, that is intense to allude to the time he was held as a p.o.w. in vietnam.
i can see between contractions getting bored, not wanting to talk to your husband at that particular moment, doing a little facebooking. to each his own. oh, man. good morning, everybody, i m rob nelson. happy thursday. i m vinita nair. the senate appears headed for a showdown over spending. republican lawmakers propose to block a huge bill loaded down with billions in pet projects. the measure also contains a lot of money to keep vital government services running. john hendren is joining us now from washington. good morning, john. reporter: good morning, rob and vinita. both parties have spent a lot of time lately criticizing pork barrel spending. but old habits die hard. the president and leading senators say they plan to eliminate those pet projects they call earmarks. critics call it pork. first congress is loading up plenty of christmas gifts for powerful lawmakers. the so-called omnibus appropriations bill, $1.1 trillion, to keep the government running for the next year
coming up, and the analogy of a christmas tree has been used to describe this bill with some of the extra add-ons and what some are calling stimulative initiatives that are attached onto a bill that was really about tax cut extensions and the extension of jobless benefits for so many americans. how do you reconcile that yourself with looking at this bill and what maybe some thought it was going to be to what it has become now? look, there s some things i really don t like here. some things i intensely dislike. but we ve got to keep in mind the overall effect of this package. and so if we look at the big elements; tax cuts for the middle class, extension of unemployment benefits, a partial payroll tax holiday. we know based on the best economic advice congress and the president are getting that those are very important to economic growth for the future. jenna: so, senator conrad, i only have about
