Mustafa Gençsoy backed northern Cyprusâs unilateral declaration of independence in 1983, but considered himself a Londoner
My friend Mustafa Gençsoy, who has died aged 89, was a prominent leader of the UK Turkish Cypriot community. For more than 40 years he was chair of the Cyprus Turkish Association, based in London, playing a major role in serving and championing this vibrant community.
In addition to providing support to families and representation, his priority was to sustain the CTAâs listed building in DâArblay Street, Soho, and to preserve its library and archives, which document Turkish European modern migration to Britain â as he saw it, a treasure-trove of knowledge and history.
