Seven Sudanese legal and human rights groups have called on the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the need to take international protection measures on marches and processions on June 30, noting the violence previously used against peaceful demonstrators.
The Sudanese-Ethiopian border tensions witnessed rapid developments after the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) reported the killing of a Sudanese citizen and seven army soldiers by Ethiopian armed forces who raided and captured the El Usra area in El Fashaga, El Gedaref, on Wednesday last week. Omar El Degeir, head of the Sudanese Congress Party, Ali El Sanhouri, head of the Baath party, former rebel leader and political advisor to the prime minister Yasir Arman, and Siddig El Mahdi, a leading member of the National Umma Party, were released yesterday.

Minni Minawi, head of the split-off Sudan Liberation Movement faction SLM-MM and signatory to the Juba Peace Agreement, said at a press conference in Khartoum yesterday that he is opposed to the withdrawal of the UNAMID peacekeeping mission.
At a press conference, held together with Omar El Degeir, chairman of the Sudanese Congress Party (SCP) and leading member of the Forces for Freedom and Change, Minni Minawi stated that the Sudanese forces, consisting of the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), cannot replace UNAMID.
“UNAMID not only protected civilians, but also played social, economic, and logistical roles,” he said. “Large numbers of Sudanese people have benefited from the mission s activities.”
