Lagos Mobile Courts Convict 62,477 Traffic Offenders

By Segun James The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), has stated that the state Mobile Courts arrested, arraigned and convicted 62,477 traffic offenders in the state in one year. Onigbanjo, while briefing journalists on the stewardship of his ministry, noted that during the period under review, 62,477 persons had faced the law over various traffic offences such as the use of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane, street trading, driving against traffic, willful obstruction as well as violation of the COVID-19 regulations. According to him, “The Mobile Courts sit on Saturdays at different locations across the state and deals with cases of violators of COVID-19 regulations.”

But an angry Ekekwe, 34, described the amount as too inadequate to compensate for his ordeal. In his petition, Ndukwe told the panel that he was unlawfully arrested at the market on February 16, taken to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) head office at Ikeja, stripped naked and brutalised in a torture chamber.

2 min read Ndukwe Ekekwe, a 34-year-old man who told the panel he was pushed off a two-storey building by police officers, on Tuesday, openly displayed his dissatisfaction at the ‘meagre’ sum awarded to him as compensation for the brutality he suffered in the hands of the police. Doris Okuwobi, the chairperson of the panel, awarded N7.5 million to Mr Ekekwe, a gesture which led to the petitioner’s mother bursting out in tears and the petitioner himself revolting. “Wetin be N7.5 million? I spent over N30 million, I sold my land. Wetin I wan take N7.5 million do?” he shouted at the panel.

A Federal High Court, sitting in Lagos, has upheld the Lagos State government’s right to restrict commercial motorcycles (Okada) and tricycles (Keke Marwa) within six local government areas and nine Local Council Development areas, LCDAs, in the state.

Views: Visits 146 A Federal High court in Lagos has upheld the Lagos State Government‘s order restricting the operation of motorcycles (Okada) and tricycle (Keke Marwa) within six local government areas and nine Local Council Development areas in the state. The Lagos State Government had in January 2020 enforced a law that restrains the operation of both Okada and Keke Marwa in some local government areas of the state such as Apapa LG- Apapa Iganmu LCDA, Lagos Mainland LG – Yaba LCDA, Surulere LG- Itire-Ikate and Coker-Aguda LCDAs, Ikeja LG- Onigbongbo and Ojodu LCDAs, Eti-Osa LG- Ikoyi-Obalende and Iru/Victoria Island LCDAs, Lagos Island LG- Lagos Island East LCDA.
