Itsekiri indigenes protest, call on AIG to hands off chieftaincy matter

Share Itsekiri people in their hundreds on Friday staged a peaceful protest to the office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG, Zone 5, Benin City, asking the police to halt the investigation into the Olu of Warri kingship matter and allow the Itsekiri nation to resolve the matter amicably. The protesters, drawn from different age grades in the Kingdom, noted that the continued involvement of the police in the purely traditional matter hampered the peaceful resolution of the crisis. Carrying different placards with inscriptions, they denounced the interference of the police, saying such betrayed the aged tradition of the Itsekiri at resolving disputes among brothers.

Concerns over Olu of Warri s Health

There was anxiety in Delta State yesterday over the health of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Ikenwoli. Multiple sources in the state told THISDAY last night that the health of the monarch, who was said to have been receiving treatment for COVID-19 at the Lily Hospital, Warri, deteriorated yesterday. The monarch was suspected of contracting the virus from the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Major General John Olubunmi Irefin, who died recently. According to an impeccable source, the Olu developed complications between Sunday and early hours of yesterday. Though details of his health status is being shrouded in secrecy according to tradition, it was learnt that the mood amongst the Itsekiris indicated “a big loss in the kingdom”.

The Olu of Warri, Ikenwoli Godfrey Emiko is dead. He passed away on Monday evening after his health deteriorated at Lily Hospital in Delta State at the age of 65. There was anxiety earlier today over the state of his health. Sources said the monarch’s health nosedived on Sunday evening. Chiefs, community leaders and place staff declined to comment about the condition of the Olu, saying they were not authorised to speak. Details of the death of the monarch remains sketchy but there are indications that his death may not be unconnected to COVID-19 complications as he might have contracted the virus from the late General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Port Harcourt in Rivers State, Major General, Olu Irefin who died from it recently.
