In a small New Hampshire tourist town, the front of a roadside bakery is adorned with an image of the sun rising over a row of doughnuts, muffins and other pastries.
In June 2022 Leavitt’s Country Bakery unveiled a whimsical new mural featuring a mountain range made of pastries. A week later a zoning officer showed up and told them the mural was illegal because depicting pastries made it count as a sign and this “sign” was too large for the building.
The town is doubling down despite immense public backlash. In response, the bakery recently filed a federal lawsuit.
