Picture: Nina Sleptsova/NEFU First ever check for paleo-viruses on the Pleistocene era animals preserved in permafrost of Yakutia, Russia’s largest and coldest inhabited region started today in the Mammoth Museum of Yakutsk.  More than 50 samples were taken from 4,450 year old remains of the Verkhoyansk horse, found in 2009 in north-east of Yakutia and other prehistoric animals from the collection.

Siberian Researchers Begin Sampling Ancient Animal Remains For Paleo-Viruses , Report Says © Sputnik / Khamzin Subscribe MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Scientists from Russia’s Vector Virology Research Center have begun inspecting mummified remains of ancient Siberian animals for primordial viruses, media reported Tuesday. According to the Siberia Times newspaper, more than 50 samples were taken from the soft tissue of a 4,450-year-old carcass of a horse in the Mammoth Museum of Yakutsk. © Sputnik / Michil Yakovlev Researchers from Vector and Yakutia’s North-Eastern Federal University will collect samples from a 43,500-year-old woolly mammoth, an elk, dogs and other animals unearthed in the frozen Siberian wilderness.
