Oldham Lib-Dems - six-month Universal Credit extension a ‘disappointment’ Date published: 14 March 2021 Oldham Liberal Democrat Leader, Councillor Howard Sykes MBE The Oldham Liberal Democrats are disappointed that Chancellor Rishi Sunak has chosen not to make the £20 uplift in Universal Credit permanent in the March Budget. Oldham Liberal Democrat Leader, Councillor Howard Sykes MBE, who also serves as Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group at the Local Government Association, joined over 30 Liberal Democrat Council Leaders and elected Mayors in England in writing to the government on this issue last month. Despite their plea to the Mr Sunak to respect January’s vote in Parliament calling for a permanent increase, the Chancellor has chosen only to extend the extra £20 per week uplift in Universal Credit benefit payments until the end of September.

Oldham Council Tax: Bills are already too high to begin with say Liberal Democrats Date published: 02 March 2021 The Lib Dems say Oldham s Council Tax is already high Oldham s Liberal Democrats say the proposed Council Tax rise is small comfort to residents in the town. The cabinet has recommended an increase of 2.99% for the next financial year, meaning an increase of at least £30 across the borough. The increase is the lowest amongst the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester, but Oldham s Liberal Democrat group say the bills are still one of the highest in the area. Of the ten local authorities, the Oldham Liberal Democrats have identified that only Stockport presented a higher Council Tax bill to residents in 2020.  Oldham’s bill for a Band D property was £1,678 compared to Stockport’s £1,691.
