South Bound Lecture Series With Rita Hubbard Set For March 18 Tuesday, March 2, 2021
Rita Hubbard
Local author Rita Hubbard will present at the South Bound Lecture Series on Tuesday, March 18, at 6 p.m. via Zoom. She will be discussing her research and book African Americans of Chattanooga: A History of Unsung Heroes, that chronicles how African Americans have shaped the history of Chattanooga as far back as the 16th century. Her children s books The Oldest Student and Hammering for Freedom highlights two of these heroes.
Ms. Hubbard will take this time to discuss some of the unacknowledged history of the African American community in Chattanooga, her craft, and the significance of her writing for representation of marginalized communities.
2020 was such a dark year.
For me, the announcement of the Pfizer vaccine created a pinprick of light at the end of a very long tunnel. Finally, I found hope. And what a lift it gave my soul!
That glimmer of light helped me navigate a heavy holiday season diminished by the missing traditions of large extended family gatherings full of unmasked laughter, giant bear hugs, and white elephant gift giving shenanigans.
I felt like I could breathe a little bit easier. My chest literally expanded deeper with each breath and at night, when I awoke, my mind was not always filled with anxious thoughts about those I love most.
For parents of school-aged children, it’s finally sinking in: This will be a long COVID winter. We’re already eleven months into isolation, which feels like the previous winter never really ended. We simply went from bundling up our kids before they played in the yard to slathering them with sunscreen (for the same yard) to bundling up again. And our hearts sink every time they wander back indoors. What to do
next?
In both our families, the answer is always books. Not only does an author reside in each household; in addition, Erin runs an elementary school library, and Sarah helps plan literary conferences. Plus, both of us are preliminary judges for the annual CT Book Awards: Erin in the Children and Youth category, Sarah for Fiction. We unabashedly consider writers to be essential workers.
