1,100 flags and a reverse parade : Memorial Day 2021 in York ME

By Camille Fine & Dan Bancroft The York Weekly YORK VILLAGE, Maine  In preparation for Memorial Day, the Committee for Veterans Affairs, local veterans organizations and community members assembled Friday afternoon to place nearly 1,100 flags alongside veterans graves throughout First Parish Cemetery. This year, for the first time in recent memory, Gold Star mothers had flags placed on their graves too, according to cemetery superintendent Todd Frederick, who is also a member of the Board of Selectmen. “We’re really excited to honor the mothers of Gold star recipients, Frederick said. They deserve to be recognized.”  Police Chief Charles Szeniawski was among those to participate.

Old York Historical Society reopens for the 2021 season

Portsmouth Herald YORK, Maine Old York Historical Society is planning a phased reopening for the 2021 season. Outdoor walking tours will resume on May 31 (Memorial Day), and some of the historic buildings, including the popular Old Gaol, will reopen to the public on July 4. The guided walking tours provide visitors with an opportunity to learn about historic York in a safe, outdoor setting. Tours range in topic from a general overview of the region’s history to in-depth explorations of the Old Burying Ground, York’s war memorials, and the 1692 Candlemas Raid. New this season are specialized tours focusing on slavery in York County, and the contributions of women to the local history. Held Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays throughout the summer, the tours last about an hour, and generally cover a threes-quare block area along York Street. Ted Little, York ME Board of Selectmen, community leader dies at 80

YORK, Maine Family, friends and colleagues remember Edward Ted  Little as a good friend and hardworking community leader. Little, a current member of the York Budget Committee and former longtime member of the town s Board of Selectmen, died Sunday morning at 80 years old, according to Sue Little, his wife of 57 years. He leaves behind four children. He was a wonderful husband, and he was a wonderful dad, Sue Little said. In some ways, the COVID-19 pandemic was a gift of more time spent together, she said. Along with his public efforts to serve the community, Ted Little helped in more subtle ways. One small example, Sue said, is that he would often give rides to people without cars. He was very gentle, she added.
