POST TIME: Remembering Delray Beach’s pioneer Sundy family
Let s go all the way back to 2000, the first year of Post Time:
John Shaw Sundy became a city pioneer on the day in 1898 when he stepped off a train heading south. Sundy was a construction superintendent for Henry Flagler s Florida East Coast Railway. There s nothing here, Flagler told Sundy, relatives would recall. His reply: There will be.
Sundy became the first mayor of the city, incorporated in 1911, and was elected eight times. His wife, Elizabeth, was chairwoman of the town s first board of education and taught Latin at the school all the children attended now part of the Old School Square Cultural Arts Center. His son, Ben, also served on the county commission.
