daniellii Benth belongs to the family Maranthaceae. It is a rhizomatous slender, erect or sometimes a creeping herb. It is found in clusters in dense forests. The fruits emerge at the base, crimson coloured. The seeds are hard, black and shiny; coated with a jelly natural sweetener.
Over 170 years ago, Dr. William Freeman Daniel introduced this remarkable plant which has been used by West African native inhabitants for a long time to the world of science. Daniel was a botanist from the United Kingdom and an army surgeon. Like all British army surgeons treating the troops in equatorial Africa, he used native medicinal remedies to treat tropical diseases for which western medicine at the time had no effective cures.
