NASC DG Predicts Increase in Seed Production from 100,000mt

Ugo Aliogo The Director-General, National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC), Dr. Olusegun Ojo has expressed the commitment of Nigeria seed companies to increase seed production from 100,000 metric tonnes, which is the current production figure, adding that 50 per cent of seeds produced in West Africa are from Nigeria. Ojo, who disclosed this in Lagos during the recent launch of the Plant Variety Protection Act, said the law would make it possible for breeders to be properly recognised and remunerated. He stated that the agency would ensure that companies have improved productivity, increased competitiveness for their seeds in the global seed space, and crop yield will also increase in order to compete in the international space.

NACCIMA, NASMEs, NESG Worry as Diesel Hits N290 Per Litre

Dike Onwuamaeze There was palpable fear among members of the organised private sector yesterday over a spike in the price of Automotive Gas Oil, also known as diesel, which hit an all-time high of N290 per litre this week as against N280 per litre last week. Consequently, the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), the Nigerian Association of Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), and the National Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASMEs) raised the alarm that the new price regime might trigger a corresponding increase in prices of goods and services, as most companies in Nigeria rely on diesel to power their factories.
